Hittin' the Pubs
January 03, 2003 1:18 AM
Locals at a Devon pub were surprised to see Gwyneth Paltrow walk into their boozer for a drink. The Hollywood actress was reportedly taken there by her boyfriend Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay. The celebrity pair strolled into the Royal Oak pub and then sat in a corner. Chris had brought Gwyneth to Devon to stay with his parents in Nadderwater for a few days over Christmas. The pub is about half a mile away from his parents' 19th century Georgian manor house. One local at the bar told The Sun: "There had been talk that they were coming down for Christmas. It had caused quite a stir locally. It's not every day you go out for a drink at your local and find a Hollywood actress in there. Chris had soft drinks because he's a teetotaller and I didn't notice what Gwyneth was drinking."
Later the couple flew to Los Angeles to see in the New Year and are now thought to be on holiday in the Maldives. Chris met the US actress at a concert by his band, who have had several hits including Scientist and Yellow. She is also believed to have visited his family home while in the area making a film about poet Sylvia Plath.

I just wanted to wish everyone Happy Holidays from Bernie's Coldplay Site! Hopefully everyone is excited to bring in another great new year with tons of Coldplay action!
Just in case you're snowed in this winter and are dying for a Coldplay fix, here are some cool things to keep you busy...
- The folks over at Cleveland.com have put together a list of the 10 albums that stand out in a bad year for music that is definitely worth checking out. Coldplay ended up at #2 in their list, behind the Hives.
- In a similar story at The New Zealand Herald has named 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' #13 in its list of the top 20 albums of 2002, right behind Beck's 'Sea Change.' You can see the full list by clicking here.
- In a recent article at CNN, when asked about her musical influences, newcomer Avril Lavigne said "I listen to all kinds of bands. I like rock music, like, male rock bands. I'm more into that instead of female singers. I like Nirvana, Green Day, System Of A Down. I also like punk rock, and I love bands like Coldplay."
- And lastly, Avril isn't the only one listening to Coldplay these days. According to Zap2It.com, Elijah Wood (of LOTR fame) is also digging Coldplay these days. In the article he admits to listening to The Kinks, Roots, Coldplay, The Hives, White Stripes and Led Zeppelin.

Youthful British rockers Coldplay have been named group of the year.
The Yellow hitmakers scooped the Event of the Year gong award, for the release of their album A Rush of Blood to the Head, from the staff of and contributors to music bible Billboard.
Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age came in second, with Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot next, swiftly followed by Come Away with Me by Norah Jones, and then Bruce Springsteen's The Rising.

Missy Elliott isn't the only one flipping songs in reverse these days. Chris Martin recently sang Coldplay's entire "The Scientist" backward.
"I learned it on the way from Las Vegas to San Diego in the summer," Martin said. "It was weird. It makes you sound like you're from Pluto or something, not that there's anyone on Pluto, but you know."
Martin learned this impressive feat not out of boredom, but for the video for the song, the third single from Coldplay's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head.
Director Jamie Thraves (Travis, Blur) shot the clip, which has already been airing in Britain, with Martin singing in reverse, and then Thraves flipped it in postproduction.
Martin wanted to follow-up "In My Place" and "Clocks" with the mellow "The Scientist" because "it's not a sappy love song."
He wouldn't say much more about the song, though. Having discussed A Rush of Blood to the Head in countless interviews by now, he said he's started to feel like he's "living inside a Kmart advert."
"We seem to always talk about ourselves and how good our album is to try and sell it to people," he said, "and part of me has just stopped believing that we're any good."
If he needed any reassurance, he got it when Coldplay stole the show at KROQ-FM's Almost Acoustic Christmas (see "Audioslave Deliver Like Santa Claus, Creed Booed At Radio Show").
In addition to singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," Martin took part in an all-star rendition of Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" Martin said he couldn't say no to Beck and the Flaming Lips, who organized the performance, even though singing with other bands isn't exactly his cup of tea.
"We get asked to do funny things from time to time, but for me, doing collaborations is kind of like how I imagine it is when you sleep with someone else's wife," he explained. "I mean they're fun, but I'll always regret them in the morning, not that I've slept with someone else's wife. ... The thing is, if you do a collaboration and you're really good, you think, 'Well, I wish I'd done that with our band.' And then if you do a collaboration and you're really bad, you think, 'Oh, I shouldn't have ever done that.' "
Coldplay have gone back to Britain for the holidays but will return for a two-month tour beginning January 21 in Orlando.
"We're touring until alien invasions occur and prevent the world from existing any longer," Martin joked.
