Coldplay at V2003

August 17, 2003 2:08 PM

Festival-goers at the V2003 music festival basked in the sunshine today after enjoying music from top band Coldplay.

The British band played last night at Highlands Park, Chelmsford, watched by 60,000 people and Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow.

Ms Paltrow was spotted watching boyfriend vocalist Chris Martin from the sidelines along with fellow American actress Kirsten Dunst, Mark Owen and model Jodie Kidd.

Virgin Radio DJ Ben Jones, who introduced the band, said the blonde was "gazing at him (Martin) really, really lovingly."

The glamorous couple were recently rumoured to be tying the knot in America in the autumn. But Martin has denied the rumours.

Speaking on Virgin Radio earlier this week, he said: "Do not believe everything you read in the papers, we are not getting married." Coldplay played three new songs and a cover of It’s A Wonderful World.

Mr Jones said the audience loved every minute.

He said: "The Hives, Feeder and Coldplay were amazing, in particular Coldplay lived up to the occasion. The Foo Fighters were good but did not live up to expectations."

Tonight the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are playing at Chelmsford. Mr Jones said: "Red Hot Chilli Peppers are going to give Coldplay a run for their money tonight."

Coldplay will also be playing tonight at Weston Park, Staffordshire, where the festival is also going on.

Coldplay to Reinvent Themselves

August 16, 2003 9:16 PM

Chris Martin has told NME.com Coldplay's appearances at V Festival mark the end of an era for the band. The group rolled out the anthems for the first of their two final UK shows this year at the V Festival in Chelmsford this evening. Speaking exclusively to NME.com as they came off stage, Chris Martin said that despite getting out of the public eye for the next few months, they plan to start work on new material.

Asked if tomorrow's gig in Stafford marked the end of an era for the band, Chris joked: "Yeah, I think so. It's going to be the death of soft rock tomorrow night!"

During the gig, the band played two new, unannounced songs, as well as covering Louis Armstrong's 'What A Wonderful World' as the final song of the encore.

"One of them's shit, one of them's good," Chris said of the new songs. "We're going to dump the shit one but keep the good one. I'm sure you'll say both of them are shit!"

Coldplay played:

  • Politik
  • One I Love
  • Trouble
  • God Put A Smile On Your Face
  • Shiver
  • The Scientist
  • Daylight
  • New Song 1
  • Everything's Not Lost
  • New Song 2

  • Clocks
  • In My Place

Chris' Latest Revelations

August 15, 2003 3:51 PM

Chris has revealed some interesting things this week. First, as reported at the Rainbow Network and a few other sites, he has said that growing up his sexuality was put into question on more than a few occasions.

Chris said "My nicknames at school would generally question my sexuality which I kind of had a problem with then. But I realised when I was about 16 that it didn't actually matter, then it kind of stopped. The thing is there's probably some 14-year-old now worrying his pants off at the moment but there's no point, it doesn`t matter."

In the same article, Chris gives some insight into the band's post-tour plans. While recent interviews with Guy and Jonny made it seem like the band was going to head straight back into the studio, Chris seems to feel differently, stating that the band plans to take a year off.

"I'm not sure if we’ll come back. To be honest I’m petrified – it’s so frightening being in England, I feel like everyone hates us at the moment. We have to go away and reinvent ourselves and come back with something amazing."

Chris has also cleared up any rumors regarding his alleged wedding plans with girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow. In an article at DotMusic he is quoted as saying: "We are not getting married – certainly no marriage is happening in the near future."

Wedding Rumors Abound

August 11, 2003 7:16 PM

Hollywood stunner Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin are eager to exchange wedding vows at a British castle – near the rocker's childhood home.

Reports initially suggested the pair were to wed in the Seven actress's native New York, but the hot couple have now turned their attention to Bovey Castle in Dartmoor, England.

Martin – who's determined to insure the wedding is kept private - is reportedly keen to book the castle, because it boasts a top security system.

Owner Peter De Savary says he would be "delighted" to welcome Paltrow and Martin for their wedding, but warns he plans to close the castle in January, to carry out major renovations.
