Album Name and First Single Announced
March 11, 2005 10:00 PM
British rockers Coldplay will release their third album, X&Y, on June 7th, to be followed by an extensive world tour, kicking off June 15th in Germany.
"Everyone is playing at the top of their game," guitarist Jonny Buckland said of the follow-up to 2002's Grammy-winning A Rush of Blood to the Head. "Chris [Martin's] voice is sounding amazing." Supporting acts for the tour thus far include Interpol, Doves and Supergrass.
X&Y was recorded in the U.K. with producers Danton Supple (Morrissey) and Ken Nelson (Kings of Convenience, Badly Drawn Boy). The album's first single, "Speed of Sound," will hit radio in May.
On Friday, Coldplay will play a "secret" show at Los Angeles' Troubadour, before headlining KCRW's "A Sounds Eclectic Evening" at the Universal Ampitheatre on Saturday.

Coldplay's Secret Gig
March 09, 2005 7:16 AM
NME is reporting that Coldplay played a secret, private gig in London last Friday:
Coldplay have made their live return in London with a gig for fans – and plan to play another with a tiny club date in June.
On Friday (March 4) the band played a secret gig in their London rehearsal room for 40 invited friends and fans from the band's website Coldplay.com, where they played songs from their third album for the first time to the general public.
New songs played included 'Square One', 'White Shadows', 'What If', while a fourth new song 'Fix You' was on the setlist but not played.
The band, who release their currently untitled new album in June, have also confirmed a special small gig for June.
The time and location is being kept a closely guarded secret. However, the show will be recorded for Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show and the station are giving tickets away to listeners in the run up to the event.
The small show will be Coldplay's first in Britain for over 18 months, and Chris Martin said he hoped it would be a special night for all concerned.
"We want some couple on their first date," he said. "I want them to have the best time and go home and have their first snog and for it to be the beginning of their romance because the Coldplay gig was so good. We don't want to let those people down."
As previously reported, the band are well on there way to selling out their UK and Irish tour, though have released extra tickets to combat touting.
The tour visits:
* Dublin Marlay Park (June 22)
* London Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium (27-28)
* Glasgow Bellahouston Park (July 1-2)
* Bolton Reebok Stadium (4-5)
For ticket availability, go to NME Tickets or call them on 0870 1 663 663.
If, by any chance, you were one of the lucky fans who got to attend, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the performance and especially some of the new songs.

Birthday Surprise for Chris Martin
March 06, 2005 9:15 PM
Coldplay's Chris Martin celebrated his birthday by having 2,000 people sing happy birthday to him down the phone.
The singer, who celebrated his 28th birthday on Tuesday (March 1), was phoned by his friend, Embrace singer Danny McNamara, during a gig at Cambridge Corn Exchange.
The capacity crowd then joined in a rendition of happy birthday while Martin listened on the other end.
Martin, who is readying the new Coldplay album for release, wrote Embrace's 2004 hit song 'Gravity'.
Singer Danny pulled off his stunt after the band completed their encore at the end of the sell-out concert.
He had earlier told the crowd that he would phone Chris Martin while he was performing 'Gravity'.
One audience member said: "Danny just pulled his mobile phone out and announced he was going to phone Chris.
"He got him on the other end, wished him happy birthday and had a bit of a chat.
"He then held the phone up to the audience and everyone sang happy birthday."
