Two Estonian Students Chat with Coldplay via Skype

June 01, 2006 8:12 AM

Two Estonian university students enjoyed a private 20-minute Skype call with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin yesterday.

Edging out 6,000 other hopefuls, the pair was handpicked by band members from a worldwide pool of contestants who left a message in Coldplay's Skype voicemail to tie in with the release of "Talk," the hypnotic hit single released from Coldplay's multi-platinum third album "X&Y" a few months ago.

The contest was a joint promotion by Skype, the global Internet communications company, and EMI, the world's largest independent music company. The promotion was open to all Skype users through a dedicated contest website at www.skype.com/campaigns/coldplay. The site also features a streaming video of the "Talk" single, directed by Anton Corbijn.

The winning entry by 22-year-olds Kaisa Mannik and Tiiu Laks, chosen for its originality and character, passionately highlighted the difference between the way bear sounds are impersonated around the world ("Rawwrrrggghhh!"), and the way it is done in Estonia ("Momm-momm!").

"Turns out Chris Martin actually is as friendly and cool as he appears on the Web, TV and magazines," Kaisa Mannik said after the Skype conversation with the Coldplay singer. "There were no awkward moments. He was just the way we expected him to be: famous, but down-to-earth."

"The next Coldplay album will be very interesting and experimental," added Tiiu Laks. "Which is great, but we also got him to promise to meet us, should they ever play in Estonia. I told Chris I'll be a lawyer soon and he better keep his word. He agreed."

Skype allows anyone with an Internet connection to make free Internet voice and video calls.

Available in 27 languages, Skype is used by people in almost every country around the world, and Skyping has become a global phenomenon.

Coldplay Denied at Novellos

May 26, 2006 7:36 AM

Apparently Coldplay got snubbed at the Novello Awards this week:

Coldplay are in shock after failing to pick up one honour at last night's (May 24th) prestigious Ivor Novello Awards, despite being hotly-tipped to win in three categories.

The Chris Martin-fronted band had been nominated for Best Song Musically And Lyrically for Fix You, and International Hit Of The Year and Most Performed Work for Speed Of Sound.

But chart-topper James Blunt beat them off, winning two gongs for Most Performed Work and International Hit Of The Year for You're Beautiful, at the UK music industry ceremony.

Singer/songwriter Kt Tunstall picked up the coveted Best Song trophy for her smash hit Suddenly I See, while Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett of Gorillaz were named Songwriters Of The Year.

PR Inside has all the details.

The Coldplay frontman will "perform one of the band's songs in your own front room", however there is a stipulation - "a piano must be provided... and max of 10 people in audience".

Chris and Classical Music

May 08, 2006 11:57 PM

Coldplay star Chris Martin has said he is considering becoming a classical music student when he is "too old" to be in a band.

"When I'm 40, too old to be a rock star, I plan to go back to college to study classical music," the 29-year-old told the New York Post.

He spoke at a New York Philharmonic concert featuring music from the films of Steven Spielberg.

The director is the godfather of Martin's wife, actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

The couple attended the event three weeks after the birth of their baby Moses, a brother to 23-month-old daughter Apple.

Martin offered no further explanation as to his classical aspirations.

Last week Coldplay received three nominations at the Ivor Novello songwriting awards, which honour British songwriters, composers and music publishers.

The group's song Speed of Sound was shortlisted for international hit of the year and most performed work, while Fix You - also taken from their current album X&Y - was listed in the best song category.
