Police on Friday dropped a malicious damage charge that was filed against Chris Martin, lead singer of British band Coldplay, after he allegedly smashed the windshield of a photographer in Australia.
It was not immediately clear why the charge was dropped, but lawyers for the singer had applied at an earlier hearing to have the case dismissed.
Martin, 26, was charged following an argument with a photographer on July 20 in the east coast resort town of Byron Bay. Police said at the time that the photographer's car windshield was smashed with a rock.
Martin was not present in Byron Bay Magistrates Court Friday when police dropped the charge. Magistrate Jeff Linden subsequently dismissed the case.
At the time of the incident, Martin was in Byron Bay with Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow to perform at a music festival.
Police originally said the British singer was surfing at Byron Bay's Seven Mile beach and later confronted a photographer who had taken photos of him.
